We use MLXchange at our MLS.  Sometimes I am out with a client looking for a new commercial space in restaurant row here in Rogers, or out showing one of the luxury homes we have in Shadow Valley, or even at a listing appointment with a customer, and I need a piece of information that is on my MLX.

I don’t know how many of you real estate agents out there are have an MLS that uses MLXchange.  While IDX services run on any operating system, the kids at MLXchange have not gotten up to date with plugins and such, so those who use MLXchange have to use Internet Explorer to use their software.  There is nothing wrong with using Internet Explorer, except that you have to use Microsoft Windows.

Linux and Macs used to be able to use Internet Explorer as a browser, but now things have changed and only windows gets updates for IE.  So if you figure that 10% of the people in the US use Macs, by the same token 10% of the realtors in the US use Apple Macs and OSx.

I was reading about some companies that are setting up virtual Windows machines on servers and other technical stuff.  Then users of Ipads can just login and use windows on the server.  This works kind of like citrix.  So I got thinking…

What if I got the Dell laptop that my sweet teenage daughter knocked off the table (and messed up all the hinges and case) and made a little virtual server out of it? Or what if I just had it boot into a normal windows session, then I could access it from my iphone, my mac, my linux box, and hopefully soon, my IPad 2?

How to set it up:

1. Get the laptop and setup a fresh windows install if you can.  If not, what you have on it will work.
2. Erase everything you don’t need, and turn off all the graphics, screensavers, services, etc. that you don’t need.
3. Make the computer boot on at a certain time each day in the setup options.  (I put 8:00 A.M.)
4. Make the computer turn off at a certain time of day.  (Even here in Rogers Arkansas the Realtors need rest)
5. Install VNC server and set it up to run on start up.
6. Put your Internet Explorer in the “Start up” section of the Start menu.
7. Install the no-ip client on the laptop.
8. Setup your router to port forward port 5900 to the laptop.
9. Download the VNC app to the iphone or ipad.
10. Download the JollyFastVNC client for the imac.
